Driving to Extinction

UAW Agreement May Shut Down 2 GM Plant

The moves are the downside of job security pledges that the UAW won in the negotiations, including commitments for new products at 16 plants.

This is a hot topic for so many Americans because so many of us are members of a Union. I am not, so I suppose I may be biased. In my experience though, with friends and family the Union has little merit in today’s workforce and I do speak from a professional opinion as I am a Career & Employment Specialist for DOL.

The Union had a place in society in the past as the conditions in so many jobs were not good for the workers, but there are more than enough OSHA laws on the books to keep that from being a problem any more. It seems to me that the only ones that benefit any more are the Union leaders and officials.

I guess the Common Sense thing for me is that if you feel you need more money or a better job - Go find a new one!

Unions had their place, and still do in some places, but most are now like big corporations. I witnessed the demise of the GM Van Nuys plant in California thanks to the UAW. The employees out-priced themselves. Its not that I think they have too high of a wage, its the the fact they don’t earn it. Many of the former Van Nuys employees lived in my neighborhood and often talked about how much they slacked-off on the job. Try doing that in a non-union shop buddy! You’d be out so fast that the door would never hit you in the butt! Look what is happening in NYC with Con-Edison. The city is hitting hard times with utilities that have been “maintained” by union labor for many years and now it is starting to seriously break down.

I also hate the fact that union employees don’t want you crossing their picket line. Remember the big grocery strike a few years ago? Yeah, I stopped crossing their lines . . . and got used to not shopping there at all! I took my business elsewhere. Now those very employees are mad at me for not shopping there.

Know what bumper sticker is seen the most on cars parked at the unemployment office? Live Better, Work Union.

    ‘Nuf said.

I work in the Unemployment Office (But not for Unemployment) so I know exactly what you mean. I get to see this first hand as well. All the Union Workers think they’re Union is so great yet this is the kind of stuff that it brings about.
