At least that’s what this article would have you believe. Advocacy Group: Drop Shrek From Anti-Obesity Ads
I have to admit, when you first read their claims it seems like a fairly good idea. Then you look at the actual organization and what they believe and it’s easy to spot some illogical thinkers.
From the Campaign For A Commercial-Free Childhood Website:
We believe that children have the right to grow up in a safe and healthy environment; that parents have the right to raise their children without being undermined by corporate marketers; that schools, communities, and nations, if they deem it necessary, have the right to restrict commercial access to children. Marketers do not have the right to exploit children for profit.
On the surface this doesn’t seem like a bad statement, but the implications here are obvious. They want to empower the government to censor ads as they see fit. So much for the First Amendment. I guess it is a little outdated.
As someone who works as a Director of a children’s program I fully believe that children deserve to grow up in a safe and healthy environment. I also believe that businesses have the right to sell their products and make money and advertising is one way in which they persuade consumers to buy their products.
Again we’re looking for someone else to blame. Parents forget who is in charge and let their children run things. I’ve seen this problem on several occasions. Parents should take the responsibility to have an impact on their children’s lives and stop blaming other people for the problems that exist.
It’s like blaming Subway and Jared for making you skinny. They might have inspired you to do something but ultimately you had to take action for yourself.
That’s your dose of common sense for the day!

For this post I’m going to talk about something a little less important than most of my topics. I’m going to talk about Drive which is a new show on Fox.
I really enjoyed the show and was looking forward to seeing where it was going. Part of the reason I started watching the show was because of it’s star actor Nathan Fillion of Firefly fame. Drive, like Firefly, is already being canceled by fox I assume, because of low ratings. That would be the common sense answer. The show isn’t getting the ratings that Fox thinks it should be getting so they are canceling the show. That just makes sense.
I wish that weren’t the case but that is reality.
